Admission to the PhD Programme 2009

Format of the Ph.D. Programme
Research Scholars undergo intensive course work during the first year. The Medium of Instruction is English. On successful completion of the course work they will be registered For a Ph.D. degree with the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Students are paid a scholarship of Rs. 12,000 per month For the first two years and RS. 14,000 thereafter, subject to satisfactory progress. In addition, they are paid a book grant of Rs. 5,000 per annum for four years. Students are also provided hostel accommodation. RRI encourages and supports participation of students in national and international conferences.
RRI is also a participant in the Joint Astronomy
Programme (JAP) with the Indian Institute of
Science, Bangalore and the Physics in Biology
Programme with the National Centre For Biological
Sciences, Bangalore.

Who are eligible & How to apply

Students must have a first class M.Sc. degree in Physics or Chemistry or a first class degree in Engineering. Students who expect to complete their degree in the academic year 2008-2009 may also apply.

Applicants for research in Physics are advised to appear for the Joint Entrance Screening Test 2009 (JEST 2009). JEST.2009 will be held at several centers throughout the country and is being administered by the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), Kolkata. Application forms and additional information may be obtained from the VECC website http://jestO9.veccal.ernet.in, or by writing to the Following address along with postage stamps of Rs.60/- affixed on a self-addressed slip of (approximate size of 20 cm x 1 5 cm), This will be used to mail the application form.

JEST will be held on Sunday, February 15, 2009, From 10,00
am. to 1.00 p.m.

Students with outstanding performance in advanced GRE (in the relevant subject), GATE or NET examination may apply directly to RRI.

Call letters for interviews will be sent to the selected students by RRI around mid-April 2009.

Final selection will be made on the basis of the performance in the interviews to be held at RRI, Bangalore, around mid-June 2009.

For applicants For research in Chemistry and in Signal Processing, Imaging & Instrumentation, appearing in JEST is not mandatory. Selection will be based on a written test and interviews to be held at RRI around mid-June 2009.
