Physics Training and Talent Search (PTTS) 2016
This program is fully funded by Infosys Science  Foundation

What is PTTS?

Physics Training and Talent Search (PTTS) is a training program for undergraduate and post graduate students. The first program of its kind was held at Kuvempu University, Karnataka for about 50 BSc III year students selected across India, with funding from several research Institutes and science academies in 2015. This program was highly successful and motivated to continue it.

Aim of the programme

  1. To train motivated undergraduate students to understand and apply physics concepts in both theory and   experiments
  2. To provide a platform for motivated students to interact with peers and experts in the field
  3. To identify talented students and nurture their talent for a research career in Physics

a) Difference in teaching methodology
b) Emphasis on proper foundations in physics
c) Identify talented students from rural, colleges and smaller universities, who may not have access to good education. (Students from IISERs, IITs and Central Universities will be given low priority.)

The programme is modelled along the lines of highly successful Mathematics Training  and Talent Search (MTTS) programme that has trained several mathematicians in India since 1993. For details visit www.mtts.org.in .

Other similar programmes in Physics are the Advanced B.Sc. (Physics) Programme in Ahmedabad, the REAP programme in Bangalore [http://www.taralaya.org/reap.htm] and STIPAC: Summer Training in Physics and Chemistry at IGCAR, Kalpakkam. Coordinators of PTTS have been associated with the programmes at Ahmedabad and Kalpakkam.

Details of the Programme for 2016

PTTS 2016 is for BSc / Integrated MSc III  year students who are highly motivated towards research.

Structure of the PTTS Programme
Every working day, there will be two lectures of 90 minutes duration in the forenoon followed by two tutorial sessions of 90 minutes duration in the afternoon.   The schedule will also include experimental sessions. :
Courses
Mechanics
Quantum Mechanics
Experimental Physics
Resource Persons:
This will be announced later. To bring students in contact with scientists, all the courses will be taught by faculty doing research at either universities or research institutes. There will also be guest lectures on topics of current research. There will be a session on career prospects in physics.

Methodology of training
Unlike in traditional lectures, in this programme classes will be interactive in nature.  Students will be asked questions, and will be encouraged to ask questions in the lectures. They will be asked to come to the blackboard to solve a problem or explain a concept during tutorials.  There will be an emphasis on clarifying students’ understanding of fundamental principles.  Assignments for the afternoon tutorials will include problems and discussion questions based on the topics discussed in the morning.  Students will be encouraged to discuss the solutions among themselves with the teacher playing more the role of a facilitator. An appropriate syllabus will be developed keeping in mind the college syllabus in different parts of the country.  The experimental physics course will be structured so as to make students think of how to propose and design an experiment, and to identify errors in obtaining and interpreting the data.  They will not be given a pre-designed experiment with instructions. The emphasis in both theory and experiments will be on training students to think independently. Motivated students will learn to enjoy doing physics.
Selection Process
  • About 50 students from all over India will be selected.

  • The selection of students will be by a committee consisting of the coordinators.
  • Students from colleges and smaller universities, who may benefit the most from the exposure to a programme such as PTTS, will be preferentially selected.
  • Selection will be based on the performance in any standard examination such as the National Graduate Physics Examination (NGPE), NTSE, KVPY, academic performance at school and college level, teacher's recommendation, your responses in the application form, etc.
  • The students have to write a 250 word essay " Why I want to attend this program".
Teachers when giving recommendation letters are encouraged to assess the students for high motivation, analytic ability, how quick they are in understanding concepts, curiosity and eagerness to ask questions in class.
