Opportunities at PRL

Physical Research Laboratory (Ahemedabad), an autonomous unit of the Department of Space, Govt. of India, invites application for faculty positions from young and accomplished scientists with proven academic and research credentials in any of the following areas: Astronomy & Astrophysics, Solar Physics, Planetary Sciences, Space & Atmospheric Sciences, Geosciences and Theoretical Physics.

The positions are for young academics with two to four years of post-doctoral experience and proven record of independent research and publications. Suitable openings for more experienced persons with excellent track record are also available.

Applications should include CV giving full academic record, a list of publications in refereed journals, awards and honours, a research proposal (3-4 pages) that may be pursued at PRL, and names of five referees for seeking professional opinion. Applications can be sent by post to The Dean, Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad-380009, India, or by e-mail to dean @ prl.res .in.
Research Divisions & Opportunities The programmes of the Astronomy & Astrophysics Division at PRL primarily centre around the use of the IR Observatory at Mt.Abu and focus on the study of star formation processes; stellar evolution; novae; active galactic nuclei and extra-galactic sources. The observations from Mt. Abu are supplemented with observations from other land- and space-based telescopes. The Division also has interest in X-ray and Radio astronomy. Plans for space-borne experiments in X-ray and infrared astronomies have been initiated. The Division is looking for young astronomers, preferably with observational experience and having experimental background in infrared astronomy. The person should be well-versed in analysis and interpretation of data obtained by both ground- and space-based telescopes in the visible and IR band.

Studies of transient energetic phenomena in the Sun such as solar flares and CMEs, and of space weather are pursued at the
Udaipur Solar Observatory (USO) based on data obtained at USO as well as data from space borne solar observatories. It is one of the six global sites monitoring solar oscillation, under the GONG project, to understand the processes in the solar interior. Opportunities for motivated young scientists are available at USO where a new Multi-Application Solar Telescope is being installed. USO is also taking active part in design and development of a space-borne experiment for studying solar coronal processes.

The
Space and Atmospheric Sciences Division studies ionosphere and mesosphere-thermosphere system and the middle and lower atmosphere with focus on atmospheric aerosols and trace gases and their radiative forcing and climatic implications. Ground-based and laboratory studies are complemented with extensive field studies and rocket and balloon borne experiments. Laboratory studies of photon and low-energy electron induced atomic and molecular processes relevant to atmospheric sciences are also pursued. The division is particularly interested in expanding studies of physical, chemical and anthropogenic processes affecting the terrestrial atmosphere. There are opportunities for young scientists with excellent credentials to pursue study of lower atmosphere, and modeling studies of atmospheric chemistry, radiation balance and dynamics. New space-based programmes for atmospheric studies also require persons with experience in development and use of sensors and laser-based techniques. Openings also exist in other research areas pursued by the Division for persons with strong credentials.

The
Geosciences Division focuses on the temporal evolution of the earth through studies of isotopic, chemical and luminescence signatures in samples from various reservoirs of the planet. It is actively pursuing multidisciplinary studies in different areas of Earth System Sciences, with emphasis on Isotope geology and geochemistry, Ocean Sciences, Atmospheric Chemistry and Climate Change in short- and long-time scales. The division has several state of the art facilities and well equipped laboratories that will be soon strengthened through the addition of an LA-MC-ICP-MS. The Division is looking for young scientists to strengthen studies in ocean sciences (marine chemistry, ocean circulation and paleo-oceanography) and atmospheric chemistry (aerosol, wet precipitation and cloud physics). Opportunities are also available in the other research areas pursued by the Division. Candidate with Ph.D. in Physics / Chemistry / Earth / Ocean / Atmospheric Sciences and with demonstrated expertise and research record are encouraged to apply.

The research focus of the
Planetary Science Division is on early evolution of the solar system; solar-stellar relation; evolution of Martian atmosphere and laboratory studies of meteorite and lunar samples. It is actively involved with the Indian Moon Mission, Chandrayaan-1 and has the mandate to develop the Science Plans for future missions to Moon, Mars and Asteroids. The division has excellent experimental facilities for pursuing laboratory studies of planetary material; the latest addition is the high resolution secondary ion mass spectrometer, nano-SIMS. It would like to strengthen researches in the area of planetary remote sensing studies and comparative planetology. Opportunities are available for young accomplished scientists with background in remote sensing techniques and applications as well as in planetary geology and conversant with the use of sophisticated tools for geochemical and isotopic analysis. ISRO has also entrusted this Division to run the PLANEX (Planetary Exploration) Programme.

The
Theoretical Physics Division examines the fundamental interactions of nature to address some basic questions in Astro-Particle physics; High Energy Physics, Cosmology, Atomic & Nuclear physics, Nonlinear Dynamics, Quantum Optics and experiments on charge inversion in optical vortices. High level computational facilities are available in-house and also through linkage with other supercomputing facilities in the country. The division is looking for young scientists with excellent credentials to strengthen research in the area of Non-linear Dynamics. Job opportunities also exist in the other areas of research pursued by the Division.

Opportunities are also available for persons with excellent academic/technical background and having experience in design/development of various sub-systems of space-borne instruments for participation in the New Initiative on Space Instrumentation in the areas of planetary sciences, astronomy, atmospheric sciences and solar physics.
