PhD studentship – Nanoscale investigation of functional thin films at Cranfield University

Supervisor: Dr Steve Dunn
Duration: 3 years
Award: PhD

Supported by EPSRC and NPL, a studentship of up to £15,000 p.a. for 3 years including fees* is available

With the commercialisation of the PS2, Sony incorporated the ferroelectric RAM into a consumer product. This application of a new type of RAM has led to a vibrant research field investigating the influence of nanostructuring functional materials such as barium titanate. This project will develop a new technique to enable the investigation of such functional materials at the nanoscale and help to further understand the influence of nanostructuring on the physical properties of the material.

This project is an extension of the work that has been undertaken by Dr Steve Dunn and co-workers at Cranfield and is in collaboration with Professor Markys Cain of NPL.

Applicants should have an interest in nanoscale technology and, preferably, have a background in chemistry, physics or electronic engineering. The project will be based at Cranfield with occasional travel to NPL, Teddington, London.

For further information regarding this studentship please contact Steve Dunn directly via 01234 754066 or  s.c.dunn {at} cranfield.ac(.)uk.

Closing Date: 20th November 2009
Start date: ASAP

Entry requirements
Applicants should have a first or upper second class UK honours degree in chemistry, physics, electronic engineering or similar discipline. Good laboratory skills are also required

Funding
*Supported by EPSRC and NPL, this studentship will cover tuition fees at the UK/EU rate only and provide a bursary of up to £15,000p.a for three years dependent upon qualifications, experience and project. To be eligible for funding applicants must demonstrate a relevant connection with the UK, usually through being ordinarily resident for a period of 3 years immediately prior to the date of application for the award. However, nationals of other member states of the European Union are eligible for fees-only awards if they are resident in their own country in the same way that other candidates are required to be resident in the UK.
