APPLICATIONS ARE INVITED FOR THE INTEGRATED PH.D PROGRAMME
FOR THE ACADEMIC SESSION 2009-10

  1. Who can Apply

  2. Students with a B. Sc/B.E/B.Tech/M.B.B.S degree from any recognized university/institute/ College can apply for the Integrated Ph. D programme in Biological, Chemical, Earth, Mathematical and Physical Sciences.  They need to secure a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent grades in their qualifying examinations. Those who are appearing in the final examination of their degree course can also apply; for them, the eligibility marks are 60% in aggregate, based on the marks obtained in the undergraduate examinations held so far.
    Students applying for an Integrated Ph. D Programme are required to have the following subject(s) in the undergraduate courses:

    Ph. D. Programme
    Supporting Subjects
    Biological Sciences
    Chemistry
    Chemical Sciences
    Physics and Mathematics
    Earth Sciences
    Physics/Chemistry and Mathematics
    Physics
    Mathematics
    Mathematics
    Open

  3. How to Apply

  4. Applications should be made in the prescribed application form [ doc, pdf ].  The duly filled in application, along with a draft of Rs. 100, payable to the Registrar, Indian Institute of Science Education & Research, Kolkata, should be sent to the Registrar, IISER-Kolkata,  Mohanpur Campus, Post: BCKV Main Office, Mohanpur 741252, West Bengal - 741252, by registered post. The candidate should write PBIR with his/her chosen discipline on the top of the envelope while sending the application form (e.g., PBIR-Mathematics). The last date for applications to be received is May 31, 2009. Interviews are likely to be conducted by the end of June.

  5. Essential Items  Accompanying the Application
    Apart from attested copies of all marks-sheets (secondary examination onward), the following documents must accompany the application:

    (i) confidential letters of assessment  of the applicant in the prescribed form [ doc, pdf ], from two teachers who have taught courses and would be able to evaluate the student as a potential  research worker. The teachers should seal the envelopes and sign across the flaps; 

    (ii) a self-assessment by the student in his/her own words; 

    (iii) a plan of work (within 250 words) in the applicant's own words (do not download from the internet or copy from other sources) that the student  would like to carry out  in the Ph. D Programme.  Landline phone no. and/or mobile no. are essential. Incomplete applications may not be considered.


  6. Mode of Selection
    Institute-level committee(s) will scrutinize all the applications, and prepare a shortlist of about 70 candidates, who may be called for interview. The Institute will finally declare the list of selected candidates on the Institute website. The Institute will provide second-class (sleeper) train fare and hostel accommodation to students appearing in the interview.

  7. Student Intake
    In the Academic Session 2009-2010, a total of 22 students may be selected, covering all sciences.

    A tentative distribution is:  Physics (5), Chemistry (5), Biology (5), Earth Sciences (5) and Mathematics (2). Students will be given a monthly fellowship, as in a similar programme run by the IISc, Banglore.
